A. J. KERN DIED SUDDENLY
Our community lost another of its oldest citizens and businessmen in the death of A.J. Kern prominent miller who died Sunday morning at 7 o'clock at his home 404 Main St. after an illness of a day with a heart ailment. He was aged 86 years, 8 months and 9 days.... Born in Lehigh Gap in 1847, son of Charles and Esther [actually Anna Maria] (nee Peter) Kern. He remained upon the homestead until he attained his majority. He learned the milling trade when 18 years old. He was employed for a year in the old Custard Mill near Slatington and three years in the mill at Germansville. In 1872 he rented his present mill and operated it until 1877, when he purchased it from the Henry Kuntz estate, since which time it has been operated under his management until last year, when his son Howard E. purchased the buIness. [The mill was actually bought from the estate of Violetta Kern Kuntz]. In 1903 Mr. Kern built his residence at Main and Diamond Streets, where stood the original Kern mill.... He married in 1871 to Fietta Snyder, daughter of Eli Snyder of Pleasant Corner. They had nine children; Howard, Irwin, Gertrude, Beulah who survive and Charles, Ida, Albert, Oscar and William A. deceased. His wife died March 14, 1931. A sister Mrs. Medina German of Lehighton R4. Funeral services were Wednesday...at his home. Interment in Union cemetery.
Alfred's last surviving child, Beulah, lived the rest of her life in the Main Street house.
