The Key West Citizen, July 9, 2015

William Brodie Grooms, “Billy” sailed to sea on June 19, 2015 from Panama City Beach, FL. Billy became a conch on February 24, 1983 in Key West, FL to his parents Brodie and Jill Grooms. He graduated from Key West High and attended North Carolina Methodist on a football scholarship. Billy was gifted with his athletic abilities, spending most of his time at the Key West Baseball & Football fields and traveled with the All Star Teams. He had a passion for fishing, diving and loved boats, spending his time at the marina and in the ocean. Working for several years at A&B Marina, the salt from the Gulf ran through Billy’s veins in all aspects of his life.

Billy is survived by his fiancé, Ashlyn Holt who he met at A&B Marina and his two young children Brodie and Macie Grooms; his mother, Jill Grooms; his sister Dawn Abbott(Christopher); his brother Tracy Grooms(Lisa); his brother Steven Grooms (Shiela);nieces, Kendall, Breanna, Madison, Aubrey, Stephanie; nephews, Tyler, Lucas and Andrew. He was extremely close to his Aunt JoAnn Simons; cousins, Pete Simons, Beth Simons Johnston and Susan Heath.

He is preceded in death by his father, Brodie F Grooms and uncle L.D. “Tat” Simons.

If Billy would have had the opportunity to write a letter to his friends and family we believed that he would have asked that Key West would always embrace Ashlyn, Brodie and Macie, that you would lend them a fishing pole, show them the best lobster spots, share a hot Cuban mix and always point them in direction of the water.

A memorial service will be held at St Paul’s Episcopal Church, 401 Duval St, Key West, Florida on Saturday, July 11 at 1 p.m. There will be a small reception at The White Tarpon Restaurant, 700 Front St., Key West, FL at 3 p.m. before Billy’s close friends and family have a memorial at sea to spread his ashes.

Memorial donations can be made in lieu of flowers to an account set up for Brodie & Macie at Wells Fargo.
