William Berry Clinkscales was born in Honea Path, South Carolina. He was the son of William Franklin Clinkscales and MaCauley Davis Clinkscales. He married Catherine Elizabeth Cox, who was born in the Pendleton District(Anderson County), South Carolina, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Lucious Cox. They had 11 children; 6 boys and 5 girls. Two of their sons, John William and Jesse served in the 30th Alabama Infantry Regiment during the War Between the States.
