Add PhotosLongley Cemetery was originally located atop a small hill in Paradise, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. Burials there included members of families with surnames of Longley, Leonard and Dodge.
In the mid-1950s, the hill had to be removed to accommodate the straightening of the highway. An undertaker was present and attended to the removal of all remains and headstones, which were then relocated to two other cemeteries. Those of the surname Longley were reinterred in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton, while the surnames Leonard and Dodge were relocated to Fairview Cemetery in Lawrencetown. After this task was completed, the hill was levelled to make way for the highway.
Although Longley Cemetery in Paradise no longer exists, it will remain listed here at Find a Grave as a "Defunct" cemetery to ensure that it does not get recreated by a researcher who comes across an obituary or other source which names Longley Cemetery in Paradise as the burial location. Those burials can now be found listed in either Pine Grove Cemetery or Fairview Cemetery, as noted above.
DIRECTIONS TO NEW BURIAL LOCATIONS: Pine Grove Cemetery is located on the west end of Middleton on the south side of Hwy 1 (Main Street) between Civic #26 and #44. Fairview Cemetery in Lawrencetown is set back from Hwy 201 (Carleton Road) on the south side. A paved drive opposite Civic #425 leads to the entrance marked by a large white arch.
