Pyhän Ristin hautausmaa, Hattula
Hattula Cemetery of the Holy Cross is situated on the east side of The Church of the Holy Cross. It was established in 1921. Most of the cemetery area is planned for casket burials, but there is also a memorial grove, where ashes are buried without the urn.
The medieval church of The Holy Cross was built of bricks between 1370-1420 in Hattula village by the Lake Vanajavesi. It represents Gothic style and is one of the oldest brick buildings in Finland and actually the bricks, that it was built of, were left-overs from Häme Castle that was built at the same time period 5 kilometers south of Hattula. The church was widely known as a place of pilgrimage, but nowadays it functions as a museum because of the well preserved wall paintings that were restored after they had been limewashed after the Reformation.
For centuries there was a graveyard inside the stone walls of the Church, but it's not in use any longer. Only a few old gravemarkers can be found in the yard. Another cemetery in Hattula is found by the Hattula Church and it was established 1858 (See Hattula Cemetery).
