In 1948, Mr. Eustis Hayes and his staff surveyed this cemetery and it is from his records that we have a lot of the dates that we have. Many of the graves are made of concrete with the lettering scratched on them. Time and weather has long erased some of the writing, although some of it is still barely legible. It is hoped that descendants of these families will take an interest and upgrade these memorials with newer markers at some point in time.
In 2000 another survey was made by Mr. Barney Ewell and his son Gene. At that time sections, rows and locations were assigned to each grave. He passed his survey on to me and I put up corner markers in the cemetery to show the sections. Rows in some sections are hard to fathom due to them being so out of line. I dropped the locations because if you bury someone after the survey is taken then the location in that row gets out of line.
In 2003 the Dale County Historical Society surveyed the cemetery again for their county cemetery book. This time adding the new burials and other "still living" headstones that were not in the Ewell survey. Since then I have tried to keep up with the burials in our cemetery. The Town of Newton is the official caretaker of this cemetery. Any questions should be directed to them.
Anyone having questions or updates regarding the memorials are encouraged to address them to the person who made the memorial using the edit button. Several folks have entered memorials making this a team effort. Any major changes in the posted data should be accompanied by proper verification.
