The pastor of St. Charles, Charles O'Reilly (1846 to 1852) had purchased the land in 1848 with his own funds. When he transferred to St. Paul parish, Boston Diocese in 1852, he took the title to the cemetery with him. Church corporations were not legalized until 1869 in R.I. so he was within his right to do so.
The present St. Charles Cemetery on Farm Street in Blackstone was created in 1860 when the pastor for St. Charles Borromeo, Rev. Michael McCabe received a 2 ½ acre plot for land for burial purposes. The donation was from Mr. Edward Harris, a wealthy Woonsocket industrialist and over the years St. Charles has increased in size to over 90 acres.
The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as BLK810.
This burial ground is referenced to in the book "Vital Records of Mendon, Massachusetts to 1850" Published by: New England Historic Genealogical Society as G.R.22. The town of Blackstone separated from the town of Mendon in 1845.
