The War Cemetery is the final resting place for 42 servicemen and women who died during Second World War from war-related wounds, accidents or illnesses from both service in Australia and overseas. There is also a dedication plaque to those who died but full commemoration could not be given. There are also 9 Australian veterans of the First World War buried here, who died during the Second World War period. Another 88 burials of Australian soldiers are interred elsewhere in Cornelian Bay Cemetery and Crematorium.
The War Cemetery contains a second memorial, the Rabaul Memorial, which is dedicated to the 39 Tasmanian soldiers of the 2/22nd Battalion, ‘Lark Force', whose unit was charged with the defence of Rabaul, New Britain against the Japanese in 1942.
In 1983, the Diamond Jubilee celebration (1923-1983) saw the planting of ‘Aleppo Pine' trees in the War Cemetery. These trees were the descendants of the original Lone Pine on Gallipoli and were planted in memory of those who died in service.
