The location began as a burial site for the soldiers stationed at the frontier military post, first called Camp Verde and then renamed Fort McDowell, which was closed in 1890. The land of the Fort McDowell Military Reserve became an Indian reservation, which is today the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation. In June 1892, the government moved the remains of the soldiers to the San Francisco Nation Cemetery, San Francisco, California, leaving behind civilian burials. The cemetery land became the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation Tribal Cemetery.
