Philips Park Cemetery opened in 1866 and was the first municipal cemetery in Manchester. It is next to the River Medlock, attracting wildlife to its banks and occupies over 16 hectares. It is also adjacent to Philips Park, which was named after Mark Philips, a local businessman and Member of Parliament.

Manchester Corporation had held a competition for the design of the cemetery. Architects Paull and Ayliffes' designs for the buildings, and William Gay of Bradford's designs for the grounds were chosen. Unemployed cotton mill workers carried out the laying and planting work. There were originally four mortuary chapels built in gothic revival style, but only one remains.
