Sainte-Marie Parish (now Unité Pastorale Nouvelle Beauce - Sainte-Mère-de-Jésus) was established in 1745. There was no cemetery so early in the parish, the first burials were practiced in the vicinity of Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce, until 1748. The first cemetery was inaugurated on 7 January 1748, during the burial of a child named of Claude Dion, son of Jean Dion and Cécile Asselin. A wooden chapel, with a bedroom for the missionary priest, was built in 1754.
This first cemetery became a cemetery in superposition (3 floors of coffins) because during its 130 years of existence and not being able to be enlarged, the solution was to build around a wall of stone and to pouring earth, a lot of land. History tells that in 1840, it was raised by 6 feet and that in 1873, it was 588 trips of land that 42 citizens poured there. There were some 6,934 burials that were made in this "field of the dead."
In 1876, during Bishop Taschereau's visit to Saint-Marie, he strongly recommended that the parishoners procure another cemetery "because the one that is currently used is so full of corpses, that it is impossible to dig a pit to the depth required by law, without encountering coffins or corpses." It was in the fall of 1878 that the first levelings began and the foundation of the chapel was dug. The layout of the cemetery that we know was designed in 1879. At the same time, a hundred bodies were moved from the 1st to the 2nd cemetery.
The years passed and the first cemetery that was at the time walled and fenced became over time the wood yard for heating the church and subsequently a parking lot covered with asphalt.
In 2003-04, a team of archaeologists came to the church and exhumed the rest of the graves in the first cemetery and finally were reinterred with all the others in the 2nd cemetery.
