A number of medieval finds have been made in the graveyard over the years, and most of these are now in the National Museum, Edinburgh. A 12th or 13th century carved stone coffin lid (with an incised wheel-headed cross)was discovered in the grounds, close to where the church stands, and is now on display, attached to the south wall of the church.
The medieval church of Kingoldrum first comes on record in 1178 and in 1211-4 it was given to Arbroath Abbey by William The Lion. It was dedicated to St Medan and a holy well, dedicated to the same saint is said to have been located nearby. It would appear that the early Christian history of this site is Celtic. A number of fragments of carved Celtic stone were found built into the church as it was demolished in 1840 (to make way for the current building).
The church, part of the Isla Parish Churches, closed in December 2009 and will be put on the market. It is not clear what will happen to the church's furnishing.
