A history of St. Peter's Church
The beginnings of St. Peter's are to be found some 12 miles away in Westminster, because the contractor for the construction of the new Westminster Bridge also had the order for the building of St. Peter's Church.
Built at a cost of some £2,000 and consecrated in 1863, St. Peter's stands on the edge of Fairlop Plain, part of London's green belt.
Over the years regular maintenance has been necessary, recent major work being in 2004 when repairs were carried out (to the stonework and roof that had been eroded by the weather) at a cost of some £32,800. Until the first half of the 19th Century, Hainault Forest stretched as far down to Aldborough Hatch - the word 'Hatch' itself denoted a hatch or gate into the forestland.
The Chapel at Aldborough Hatch
It is recorded that prior to the building of St. Peter's Church, groups of Christians had met in Aldborough Hatch. Around 1728 Colonel Martin Bladen built Aldborough House fronting Oaks Lane and to the West of where St. Peter's stands today. The Chapel was left standing when Aldborough House was demolished about 1808, and passed with the estate to the Crown in 1828. Services were continued there until 1863, when the building of St. Peter's was completed and consecrated. In 1861, £20 was still being paid to the Chaplain, £3.3s. to the Clerk, £2.2s. to a pew-opener and £3 for other Chapel purposes. There are 11 wargraves here and a number of graves of civilians who perished in WWII.
