Alperton Cemetery was opened as Wembley Cemetery in 1917 and the first interment took place in 1918. The pair of chapels linked by a porte-cochère were built in 1937, a modest red brick building but having good stained glass in the burial chapel. The Columbarium was opened in the other chapel in 1942. The cemetery has paths laid out in a grid pattern, with a variety of trees throughout. There is a war grave section maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Now under the management of Brent Council, in 2017 public notices were served which announced their intention to extinguish exclusive rights in specific graves (in total 670) to enable the space remaining above previous burials and unused graves to be re-used for new burials at the cemetery. The graves listed on the notice had either not been used for a burial since the last burial over 75 years ago, or it had been more than 75 years since the Deed of Grant was issued, or the grave was purchased and the grave had not been used for a burial. Any memorials not claimed and removed by the registered owners were removed for disposal.
