Land for this second cemetery was purchased from Catherine and George Hodges at forty dollars an acre. Their two-year-old daughter, Catherine, had been one of the first burials in Prairie Home Cemetery in 1875.
This second cemetery was named "Riverside Cemetery" (not to be confused with the other local Riverside Cemetery, which is located across the river in Fargo, N.D.).
In the 1920s the Riverside Cemetery Association and the Prairie Home Cemetery Association merged, and the name of their new organization was the "Prairie Home and Riverside Cemetery Association." Today, the association also owns and operates Moorhead Memorial Gardens Cemetery, which is located south of the City of Moorhead on U.S. 75.
Riverside Cemetery was originally located in Oakport Township, but due to annexation of the township by the City of Moorhead, Riverside Cemetery is now officially located within the city limits of Moorhead.
Due to Riverside's close proximity to St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery (directly across the highway), it is often mistakenly assumed that Riverside is a "Protestant" cemetery. However, it is non-denominational. Many years ago, due to religious convictions, couples were sometimes buried apart from one another, with the Catholic spouse being buried at St. Joseph, and the Protestant spouse being buried across the road at Riverside.
Riverside continues to be a very active cemetery, with several dozen burials a year. The cemetery also maintains an on-site columbarium.
