It was named for the Masonic Order's Evergreen Lodge #137. It is also known as "Seaside Cemetery,"
and has been called the "Masonic Cemetery." Many south county pioneers are buried here,
including John and Mary Gerritse, John and Josie Selnes, Harry and Anna Wheatley and Henry and Eugenia Ober.
The "First Addition" was added in 1979 to the west of the old/original section. This cemetery is now owned and
operated by the City of Seaside.
In May, 1912 a catastrophic fire hit Seaside. With only a gravity fed one inch water main, the system failed after
only fifteen minutes of firefighting. Calls to Astoria brought equipment and men on a flatcar in only 35 minutes (a trip that usually
took one hour). But, the huge fire had leveled the four block business district of Seaside and fifty-four businesses were destroyed.
Just one year later as the town rebuilt and planned for its future, Evergreen Lodge #137 (chartered in 1909) filed Articles of Incorporation
for "Evergreen Cemetery" on 12 May 1913. The document shows signatures of local businessmen and Masons, Fred N. Moore, Rex A. Price,
and C. M. Godfrey. The plat of the original section of The Evergreen Cemetery was recorded in July, 1913. That document is signed by
J. Y. Lewis as President of the Evergreen Cemetery and by Charles J. A. Halberg as its Secretary.
The first Mason to be buried here was James Irwin in 1913. Etched on his beautiful marker is "The first to go home by Evergreen" and
"A most loving and kind brother."
