Pioneer Hill Cemetery is located within as bushland setting at 2 Elizabeth Avenue, Raymond Terrace. There are four denominational areas within the cemetery precinct: Roman Catholic, Anglican (C of E), Presbyterian and Wesleyan Methodist.
The cemetery was originally called the Raymond Terrace Burial Ground but it was not listed as a dedicated burial ground until 1863. However, the earliest recorded headstone inscription is from 1840 and the site is believed to have been used by the indigenous people in the early 1800s. With its variety of monuments and family names, the cemetery gives an insight into the history of the early settlers of Raymond Terrace. Apparently the oldest person interred within the cemetery was Owen Keegan who died aged 101 years in 1860.
It is believed that approximately 2,300 people were interred within the cemetery grounds, but almost half of these plots have no surviving headstone. The area is maintained by the Port Stephen's Council and the cemetery has been classified as an historic site. The Raymond Terrace and District Historical Society has records of the remaining legible headstones.
