Rising Star Burial Ground was originally purchased in 1834 by Methodist Episcopal.The building and grounds were sold by the sheriff to St. John Street M. E. Church in 1845 as their own burial ground was considered a nuisance by neighbors. (Public Ledger, 17 May 1841 pg 2) By 1867 arrangements were made to have those interred at St. John be moved to Rising Sun and the name was changed to St Johns M. E. Church and Burial Grounds. St Johns closed for new burials about 1890 and when Eleventh Street was built and cut through the cemetery portion "the bodies of many well known citizens were removed from that neglected spot" (Notes on Map of Rising Star Village by Walter Brenner 1895) A news article dated June 1904 states that over 700 people were removed to Oakland Cemetery.
