There is a row of 9 tombs facing south from a bank created in the NW corner. Another row of 3 tombs are found adjacent to the Harmony St. fence. The gravestones follow a general E-W line-up.
The oldest graves are in the half of the cemetery closest to Bennington St. The marble stone of Mrs. Sarah Robbins gives the death date of July 1, 1819, which predates the "official" origin of 1838. Others from the same section cluster around 1833 onward. The Boston Cemetery Report of 1898 records 2970 interments at this site. Burials declined after 1910. It is unknown how may graves received markers, but at the time of a survey in 1987 there were 302 headstones, 12 tombs and 1 veterans marker. There were also about 60 remnants of missing gravestones noted.
Additional markers of interest include a significant number (37) of those of Civil War Veterans; headstones engraved in German in a rich Gothic script; and markers commemorating immigrants from Norway, England, Ireland and Canada, reflecting East Boston's varied population.
The cemetery has suffered from extensive vandalism and many stones are broken. It is locked but can be opened if you call the Cemetery Division at Mount Hope Cemetery in Mattapan at 617-635-7361. At least 24 hours notice is required and the burying ground can not be opened on a Sunday.
The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as BOS.800 Bennington Street Burying Ground.
