Karrakatta Cemetery first opened for burials in 1899. This historic cemetery is the final resting place of many thousands of Western Australians. The cemetery is centrally located just seven kilometres west of Perth city centre and is easily accessible by car or train.
Karrakatta has older style denominational areas representing 37 religious or ethnic groups, including Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Jewish and Muslim. It also has a number of non-denominational lawn areas. It has a unique Aborignal "Keeping Place" for the remains of indigenous people which have been previously stored in museums around the state and Australia.
Since 1970, a redevelopment program known as ‘Cemetery Renewal' has been undertaken at the cemetery. This process involves the removal of headstones, grave surrounds and markers to make way for new graves, mausoleums, memorial gardens, footpaths and walls.
The original graves become unmarked walkways and footpaths that cannot be located without referencing that section's redevelopment overlay map. Physical copies of these maps are contained within metal cabinets in the area and show the positions of the old graves in relation to the new, as well as the section's new name and the year redevelopment was completed. The positions of the relocated headstones, as well as the full name, date of death, age and plot number of the deceased are detailed in a ‘Book of Remembrance,' which is also found in the cabinet.
