The first recorded occasion of Baptists meeting in St Mellons was in 1794, meeting in the village schoolroom. Numbers grew and St Mellons Baptist Church was first registered as a place of worship in 1830, when a small chapel was built on some land that had previously been purchased by the Baptists for a burial ground. In 1884 a new (bigger) chapel was built further up the road, the original chapel building was later demolished, and the site is now solely used as a cemetery. There are over 100 graves in the cemetery, dating from around 1804.
In 2003 the cemetery was converted into a Garden of Remembrance, and many of the gravestones which had become unsafe were relocated to secure positions around the outer wall of the cemetery.
