Add PhotosThe Butt Cemetery had it's beginning in the fall of 1856, September and October, when Effie Butt, and four sons died of typhoid fever and were buried on the family farm, high on a hill above the Wabash River and the old Wabash & Erie Canal. It is thought that the filthy canal and a family-dug-well were the sources for the disease. William Butt, Sr. died later of the typhoid disease.
Friends and family continued to make use of the Butt Cemetery.
The Butt Cemetery was fenced and cleared of shrubs and trees in 1976.
The cemetery is located in Erie Township, Miami County (NE Quadrant of the SW Quadrant of Section 21 Township 27 N Range 5E) north of the railroad tracks about 950 feet north of E Wabash Road (US 24 Business) about 0.7 miles east of its intersection with N County Road 450 E.
The cemetery is listed in the Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and in the State Historical Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) with Cemetery Record Number CR-52-31 (Butt).
Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 2, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (01 April 2006), gives the primary cemetery name as Butt Cemetery.
