This cemetery began in the early 1860s to replace the former cemetery located in town. The earliest burial with an existing headstone is Francesco Baccigalupo who died in 1853, and was most likely reinterred from the former cemetery with the others. The other oldest existing headstone is John Kelly who died in 1861 with many more in 1862.
Two notable people are buried here, Marie Suize aka Madam Pantaloons, who disguised herself as a man and worked the mining claims under the threat of arrest for wearing men's pants, and Angelo Noce who was the "Father of Columbus Day". There is a plaque on the hill in the center of the cemetery honoring Marie as her exact burial location is unknown.
Jackson was founded as a mining town and many of the earlier graves are miners who met an unfortunate demise. None was more tragic than the 47 who lost their lives in the Argonaut Mine Fire in 1922. There is a mass grave where they were laid next to each other. A plaque commemorates the disaster. Twenty-seven of the miners are buried here.
Also buried here are many of the past Priests who held services at the nearby church, St Patrick's, which dates back to 1852.
This cemetery is still in use today.
