1. The eastern section which opened in 1892 and contains the graves of soldiers who died in the early Nama and Herero wars, German officials, and early settlers and civilians. A later northern extension to this part contains the graves of Union of South Africa soldiers from both World Wars, and is now maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
2. The western section (aka Leutwein Cemetery) which opened in 1904, and where lie buried a number of soldiers who fell in World War I, and 157 persons who died in the 1918 influenza epidemic.
In total there are 107 graves in the old eastern section and 989 in the western, including 319 children. After 1927, the New Windhoek Cemetery at Gammams was used. The Old Windhoek Cemetery was declared a national monument in 1987.
