This cemetery is owned and managed by the Lutheran congregation of Bredstedt. It was opened in 1871. Before that the townsfolk of Bredstedt buried their dead in the old cemetery around the historic St. Nicolai Church, that cemetery no longer exists. This new cemetery has a size of 20,000 sq m (about 5 acres) with 1300 plots and two urn fields. It has an old and a newer part. The chapel was built in 1911/12.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.
