The cemetery was also known as the Mormon Tavern Cemetery, named for the tavern that no longer exists (under Highway 50), that was part of the pioneer/stage route to Sacramento and a station for the Pony Express.
The oldest existing headstone is of William Henry Sherman who died in 1854 although there could be older burials dating back to the late 1840s. As with many cemeteries at the time, headstones were made of wood which was common then and are long gone either due to theft, weather, or fire.
There are numerous unknown burial sites, some with a simple "Unknown" cast in concrete.
Two noted persons are buried here. Luther Brown Clark, one of the brothers Clarksville was named for and Samuel Kyburz, who was part of the Kyburz family that the nearby town was named for by his uncle. The Kyburz' were part of the Donner Party, but left them at Salt Lake City, Utah and went a different route, arriving before the snows.
This is an active cemetery.
