St.-Johannis-Friedhof Verden a.d. Aller
Verden an der Aller, Landkreis Verden, Lower Saxony, Germany
Lindhooper Straße 91
27283 Verden
Phone: 04231 84475
The first cemetery was surrounding the cathedral, but by the 18th century it became clear that the old cemetery was going to be filled soon. So the Lutheran Domgemeinde established this new cemetery, located at Bremer Strasse, in 1807. It is still active and one of the three cemeteries run by the Lutheran church in Verden.
There are several cemeteries in Verden:
- Waldfriedhof (Forest Cemetery)
- Jüdischer Friedhof (Jewish Cemetery)
- Alter Domfriedhof (Cemetery of the Cathedral)
- Neuer Domfriedhof
- St.-Johannis-Friedhof
- Friedhof Dauelsen
Please note that the final resting places in Germany are not eternal, due to lack of space. This cemetery has a "period of repose" of 30 years. Once the time is up for a renewal of the "lease" the cemetery administration will place a small sticker on the gravestone to alert the family to contact the office of the cemetery. Unless the family of the deceased pays for another period of 30 years, or the grave is of historical importance (in that case the city of Verden will carry the costs), it will be leveled and re-used. Leftover stones will be collected and eventually crushed and used as gravel in road construction.
