The Broken Hill City Council is responsible for this well maintained cemetery. Broken Hill is an isolated city in outback western NSW noted as being the location of the foundation site of mining giant BHP (Broken Hill Propriety Ltd). The city is noted for its silver, lead and zinc mining.
This cemetery is the largest inland cemetery in NSW. It is huge! Within its 100+ acres are over 40,000 interments. The harsh living conditions greatly affected the pioneers and there are epitaphs that reflect this. Many indicate the diseases and mining related deaths and accidents that occurred during the establishment of the city.
As well as local residents, with a wide range of nationalities and beliefs, the cemetery contains some significant Australians such as artist ‘Pro' Hart, international opera singer June Bronhill (Gough) and the graves of the only two people killed on Australian soil as a result of WWI when two Turkish patriots shot locals loaded on the ‘picnic train' (actually an open wagon) for New Year's celebrations 1915.
