Add PhotosThe Benedictine Monastery of St. Mary of the Latins - consisting of a church, hostel and hospital - was founded in Jerusalem during the early 11th Century as a place of refuge and worship for religious pilgrims in the Holy Land. It saw many visitors in the years 1033-1034, when it was widely believed the 1000th anniversary of Christ's death would herald the Second Coming. After Crusaders conquered Jerusalem in 1099 the complex was expanded, and the Order of the Knights Hospitallers of St. John (established 1113) was founded there. The monastery was destroyed following the 1267 Mamluk Conquest. The present German Lutheran Church of the Redeemer (completed in 1898) was built over the ruins of St. Mary of the Latins, some of which were incorporated into the structure.
