Columbia Burial Records Filed At Court House
An interesting addition has recently been made to the files of the recorder's office here it was announced this week by William F. King, county recorder. The addition is the inclusion of the records of burials in the Columbia City Cemetery in the official records of the county.
These records date from 1857 to 1905, when the records of the Columbia Cemetery were kept separately from those of cemeteries in Sonora. In the latter year the law changed and required all burials in the county to be filed with the county recorder.
The copied records also include a number of burials made under the auspices of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Columbia and of those made in the veterans' plot, under the auspices of Columbia Post No. 141, Grand Army of the Republic from 1889 to 1892.
The Columbia records were received by Recorder King from John King, former sexton of the Columbia cemetery, after many requests. Fear of losing or damaging the original records made the latter reluctant of letting them from his care.
