Add PhotosWhen constructed, the originally Meetinghouse was located somewhere along present day Highway 32, west of Suffolk City and near the border with Isle of Wight County. Unfortunately, there are no physical remains of it today.
The Library of Virginia holds records from this meeting for the period of 1678-1755. Various dates are given for its "laying down" with 1769 being the last date that it is referred to according to Quaker historian Hinshaw. The cause of its demise was a large scale movement of Quakers from Virginia to North Carolina as a result of the religious persecution that began anew with the restoration of the monarchy in England after Cromwell's reign.
Early Quakers were buried on their own land or in Meeting House cemeteries in graves marked with simple fieldstones if marked at all. This was the result of their desire to show simplicity and humility in death as in life. Although they kept meticulous records of life events, including death, their burial places were not noted and in modern times remain mostly unknown. This cenotaph has therefore been created for those early Friends who were associated with Chuckatuck and the early history of Virginia.
