Hämeenlinnan vanha hautausmaa
The Old Cemetery of Hämeenlinna (Tavastehus) is nowadays a park, but it was established as a graveyard in 1770's. In the old days the cemetery was meant to be outside the limits of the town, because in those days eg. cholera was common. Due to hard soil the graves were not deep enough, which passers-by could certainly notice on hot summer days.
The cemetery was expanded several times in the 1800's, but by year 1872 when the new Ahvenisto cemetery was opened, the old cemetery was turned into a peaceful strolling park in the early 1900's.
Many local prominent persons were buried here, eg. Cristian Gustaf Sibelius (*1821-†1868), father of the greatest Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Cristian Sibelius was a physician who established an infirmary into the town, but died himself from typhus when he was only 46 years old.
At the beginning of 1900's the old cemetery was restored, new paths were made and new trees and bushes were planted. There used to be a fence around it, towards Turuntie street there was a stonewall still in the 1980's, but nowadays the fences have been removed. The cemetery is situated between streets Turuntie, Eureninkatu and Erottajakatu and the Helsinki-Tampere motorway goes right beside it. In the close proximity lies one of the two orthodox churches in Hämeenlinna.
The Old Cemetery area is considered a part of Finnish archaeological cultural heritage and is therefore preserved.
