Located just outside Bologna's city walls, the Certosa, which word stands for Charterhouse: a Carthusian Monastery. The latter was founded in 1334 and served in such purpose until 1797 when it was suppressed by the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy and converted into a cemetery in conformity with Napoleon Bonaparte's Edict of Saint-Cloud, which forbade burials in churches and towns. Known for its unique pieces of sculpture and architecture, during its extensions for burial purposes, various Etruscan tombs were discovered during the second half of the Nineteenth century by architect, engineer and archaeologist Antonio Zannoni.
