On June 16, 1854, the Fabrique of the Saint-Roch parish of Quebec acquired a piece of land along the Saint-Charles River, outside Quebec City, in order to transform it into a parish cemetery. The benediction of the cemetery took place on June 3, 1855 and the first burial took place the next day. As of that same year, the families of the parish of Saint-Roch and those of the service of Saint-Sauveur are advised to bury the bodies only at the cemetery Saint-Charles. From 1829 to 1858, the Saint-Roch Parish Factory administered three small cemeteries located near the parish church. In 1858, the bodies buried in these cemeteries are raised and buried in the Saint-Charles cemetery where they still rest to this day.
June 10, 1867 remains an important date, because the factory of the parish Saint-Roch yields to the Oblate-of-Mary-Immaculate Fathers the current ground of the Cemetery Saint-Sauveur. The first burial is done one month later, on July 10th. His eminence Cardinal Elzéar-Alexandre Taschereau, archbishop of the diocese of Quebec, blessed the Stations of the Cross of Saint-Charles Cemetery on July 21, 1889. The latter is still found today in the old part. On December 21, 1912, the Government of Quebec incorporated as a non-profit corporation the "Compagnie du cimetière Saint-Charles" which obtained its charter. The Oblate-of-Mary-Immaculate Fathers then yielded the cemetery of Saint-Sauveur parish to the new corporation. A few decades later, on September 17, 1967, the inauguration and blessing of the new part of the cemetery, located on Wilfrid-Hamel Boulevard, took place. The opening of the first phase of the mausoleum-columbarium and crematorium took place on September 19, 1983.
On May 23, 2007, the Fabrique of Notre-Dame-de-Québec Parish and the Fabrique of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Parish joined the seventeen parishes that were members of the "Compagnie du Cimetière Saint-Charles" corporation to ensure the long-term survival of the two major French-speaking cemeteries in Quebec City.
