Emily Donoho Stanley, daughter of Thomas Archimedes and Mary Williamson Donoho of Caswell County, North Carolina, married Alfred Moore Stanley in Caswell County in 1843 and moved with him to St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, where he had been buying sugar-plantation land. They had four children: Alfred Dorsey Stanley, Edgar Williamson Stanley, Cecil W. Stanley, and Emily (Emma) Stanley (who married Alonzo Clay Milligan). Alfred died in 1853, leaving Emily with four young children and a sugar plantation to run. Emily was still a resident of St. Mary Parish when she died while visiting a son, Dorsey Stanley, in Mississippi in 1866.
