Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Prior the Civil War, he served in the Mexican War as a Lieutenant of Company E, 1st Virginia Volunteers. In 1861, he entered Confederate service as the Colonel of the 12th Virginia, fought at Seven Pines and at Second Manassas. He was commissioned Brigadier General in 1863, fought at the Battle of the Wilderness, Gettysburg and commanded the 3rd Corps Brigade until the end of the war. After the war, he engaged in business and banking at Richmond, Virginia until his death.
