On September 3, 1949 in Newport, Ralph married Ruth Ann Stauber Elsbernd, and they had five children: Ralph Christian Elsbernd, Mary Ann Elsbernd, Barbara Ann Elsbernd Benson, Mark Albert Elsbernd, and Beverly Ann Elsbernd Ackley. Ralph died at age 52 on October 24, 1980 in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Omaha near his wife.
