Civil War Union Army Brigadier General. US Congressman. After graduating from West Point in 1837, he fought in the Seminole War from 1837 to 1842 and the Mexican War from 1846 to 1848. In 1856 he resigned from the Army and became an Indian trader in the Dakota Territory. With the start of the Civil War he was appointed brigadier general of Volunteers of the Union Army. Shortly thereafter he was elected to the United States Congress and represented the Dakota Territory from 1861 to 1863 and again from 1864 to 1865.
