Author. His novel "Tashkent, City of Bread" (1922) is considered a classic of early Soviet Literature. It is a tale of a teenage boy who sets out on a perilous journey to find food for his ailing mother. After getting caught up in the chaos of the Russian Civil War, he succeeds in his mission. The book's documentary style is enlivened with humor and folklore and is refreshingly free of propaganda. Neverov was the son of peasants from the Volga region and most of his writing dealt with village life. He published his first stories in 1906 but did not come to prominence until after the Revolution. His experiences as a soldier, first with the Czar's Army during World War I and later with the Reds, undermined his health and he died of heart failure at 37.
