Actress. She will be best remembered for playing Ann Romano Royer in the TV series "One Day at a Time" (1975 to 1984). Born in Los Angeles, the daughter of an investment banker, she took to entertaining at an early age and trained as a tap dancer during her youth. This led to a performance on the TV program "The Colgate Comedy Hour" and her initial acting role with a minor part in the Alfred Hitchcock TV-movie "The Wrong Man" (1956). After accumulating numerous television guest spots she began a successful association on stage beginning with the off-Broadway play "Your Own Thing" (1968) and her Broadway effort with "Applause" (1970). The latter earned her a Theatre World Award and a Tony Award nomination. In 1975, she was cast as Ann Romano, the divorced mother of two daughters played by Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli in the comedy series, "One Day at a Time" and during the show's run, she earned two Golden Globe and one Emmy Award nomination. After the show ended, she became involved with the making of several fitness videos. She died following a several month long battle with pancreatic cancer.
