Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He was a successful planter and merchant when commissioned Colonel of the 3rd Texas Cavalry in July 1861. He led the 3rd Texas in engagements at Wilson's Creek and Elkhorn Tavern, Missouri, where he was wounded. In October 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General and was appointed chief of the Trans-Mississippi conscription bureau. In position, he worked at trying to reconcile the laws of the CSA Government in Richmond with those of the State of Texas. During 1864, he commanded the Confederate Reserve Corps department. After the war he continued to be a planter and merchant until his death.
