Hall of Fame Professional Boxer. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he was a flyweight fighter and was World Champion in 1935. In 1931, at age 18 he began his professional career and was soon a favourite on the European boxing circuit. He won the Scottish Flyweight Title in 1934, followed by the British and European Flyweight Titles that same year. On September 9, 1935, he defeated Jackie Brown for the Flyweight World Championship and held his title until 1938. By age 25, his boxing career was over ending with a record of 81 wins, 34 by knockout, 12 loss and 15 draws. He battled with alcoholism for the rest of his life and died of malnutrition at age 33 in Govan, Scotland. In 1998, he was posthumously inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
