Civil War Confederate Major General. Prior to the Civil War, he was a lawyer in practice when he enlisted and was commissioned a Captain in the Confederate Artillery. He commanded batteries during the Battle of New Madrid and was promoted Colonel in April 1862. In November, 1863, he was promoted Brigadier General in command of a division of horse artillery in Confederate General Wheeler's Corps. He participated in Atlanta Campaign, Buck Head Creek, Monroe's Cross Roads, North Carolina and was promoted Major General in March 1865. After the war, he resumed legal practice until his death.
