Opera Singer. She received her early training in voice and piano at home from her mother. Her formal training included studies at the New England Conservatory of Music where she received a B.A. in Music in 1938. In 1940, she won a contract with the Metropolitan Opera House where her first role was as Sophie in "Der Rosenkavalier." After leaving the Met in 1961 over a contract dispute, she continued to perform in concerts and recitals. She was head of the voice department at the Cleveland Institute of Music from 1963 to 1972; subsequently, she also taught at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, the American Institute of Music Studies in Graz as well as at her alma mater during the 1970s. She is considered one of the eminent American sopranos of the 1940s and 1950s. Her autobiography was published posthumously in 1992.
