Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. As a young 21 year old lieutenant in the 23rd Regiment of Foot British Army during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, he along with fellow officer George Monger, rescued a wounded corporal who lay hurt and exposed under heavy artillery fire. Also, he showed conspicuous bravery under heavy fire by ascending the roof of a bungalow and cutting down the thatch to prevent it from being set on fire. He passed away at age 44 from a firearm accident. Today, his Victoria Cross is on display in the Lord Ashcroft Gallery at the Imperial War Museum in London.
