Actress. Best remembered for her role as a "Munchkin" in the 1939 MGM classic film, 'The Wizard of Oz.' She portrayed two different residents of Munchkinland, a 'Flowerpot' Munchkin and a 'Sleepyhead' Munchkin. Born Margaret Williams, she began her career as a member of Henry Kramer's Midgets. Kramer's troupe was one of numerous midget vaudeville ensembles signed by MGM's casting department for 'The Wizard of Oz,' and all were credited as "Singer's Midgets." Leo Singer was the manager of the Singer Midgets, a popular vaudeville group in the first half of the twentieth century. Margaret would later comment that Singer reportedly kept half of his Munchkin performers' weekly pay. She made $50 for a 6 day work week, and once stated, "Toto the dog was paid $125 a week." After 'Oz' Margaret worked at the Treasure Island World's Fair, in San Francisco as a dancer. Her talents included tap dancing, solo routines and a "Fan Dance" with a costume that included Ostrich Feather Fans. She became known as "Little Alabam." She would opt for a life outside of show business and worked as a waitress. It was then she met and fell in love with Willie Pellegrini, an ex-prizefighter. They married in July of 1943 and soon had children. In 1971 she would return very briefly to acting for a small uncredited role in the French film, "Johnny Got His Gun." She would subsequently appear in numerous documentaries about "The Wizard of Oz." She shares a star with her other Munchkin co-stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6915 Hollywood Blvd. She passed away in Phoenix, Arizona from a stroke.
