U.S. Continental Congressman. He graduated from Yale College in 1757, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1760 and commenced to practice law in Middletown, Connecticut. He was a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, (1773-78), a member of the council of safety, (1776-77) and served in the Connecticut State Senate, in 1778. In 1778, he was elected a member of the Continental Congress, serving until 1880. After his term, he was the judge of the United States Maritime Court of Appeals, until his death.
