Civil War Union Soldier. He began his Civil war service soon after the Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter. On April 27, 1861, he was mustered in as a Private in Company K, 4th New Jersey Militia, a three-month enlistment unit that served first in the defenses of Washington, DC., then in reserve during the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign. He was honorably discharged on July 31, 1861, ahd remaind at home until the summer of 1862. On August 25, 1862 he was enrolled in the 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered in as a Corporal in Company A on September 13, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, and the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1863. Nearly a year and a half later he went back in the Union Army for a third time, being mustered in as a recruit Private in Company I, 34th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on October 3, 1864. Transferred to Company G, he served through to the end of the war, and in post-war occupation duty. He was finally discharged at Mobile, Alabama on October 2, 1865.
