Australian Prime Minister. Becoming a member of Australia’s Labor Party, he gained skill in campaign methods, was the union secretary in 1911 and secretary of the Anti-Conscription League, in 1916. He was editor of the Westralian Worker, (1918-34), was a Australian delegate to the International Labor Conference in Geneva, in 1924 and elected several times to the Australian Parliament, in 1930s. In 1941, he was elected as a Labor Party candidate the 14th Prime Minister of Australia, serving until his death at age 60. While in office, he successfully led Australia through the period when the nation was directly affected by the threats of World War II and he is still regarded as one of the country's greatest prime ministers.
