Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as 1st Sergeant of Company A, 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on May 22, 1861. He spent a year in this capacity before being commissioned as the 2nd Lieutenant of Company G on May 29, 1862, replacing Lieutenant William G. Bernard, who had been killed at the Battle of Williamsburg. After the Battle of Second Bull Run he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of his original company (September 5, 1862), replacing the promoted Lieutenant Charles Wilson. He then served until he was discharged due to disability on March 24, 1863.
